Well, the artist was a mom; so the dress that delayed the work became the work. A life-sized lithographic deconstruction of the dress, pressed into pages like an old corsage, documented a rite of passage. "Prom" contradicted everything I had been taught that art should be—namely abstract, universal, non-representational. This was personal, concrete, suspiciously narrative and, worst of all, pastel. |
