Indian Mountain is located in central Alaska, approximately 20 miles south of the Arctic Circle. Indian Mountain AFS was first operational in 1953. In the early 70's it consisted of two camps: Bottom camp which housed 60 personel, the power plant, motor pool, engineering, administration, weather and the runway (the west end is 300 feet higher than the east end). Top camp which was about 10 miles away, was home to the radars, White Alice (the communications operations), and approximately 70 support personel. Top camp had a million water tank which had to last them from mid-October to mid-April. One 2 minute shower was permitted once a week.
In the late 70's the site was made ready to transfer to civilian operation. Today the entire site is operated by fewer than 10 people.
