What are Brownfields?

Brownfields are properties that may be abandoned, idled or under-used industrial and commercial facilities where expansion or redevelopment could be complicated by real or perceived environmental contamination or impacts.  It could be complicated by hazardous substances or pollutants that may prevent re-use.

One good example, (until cleaned up) is the Sawmill facility that is located at Navajo New Mexico.  Other examples are out of business convenient stores and service stations.

Brownfields sites exist within the Navajo Nation and are to be inventoried, qualified, and proposed for cleanup action.  The current Public Record of Brownfields sites annually lists the dates of sites that are planned for  cleanup, and that have been cleaned up with suitable use and institutional control noted.  Also, any record changes are dated.  For questions or comments, email us.  The same Public Record is available at the Navajo Superfund Office located at:  High way 264, 43 Crest Road in St. Michaels, Arizona.  For inquiries other than email us, call 800/315-1846.  You also may write to the Navajo Superfund Program at:  PO Box 2946 in Window Rock, Arizona 86515.
