Machu Picchu

High in the Andes Mountains of Peru, hidden by clouds, Machu Picchu is remote, mysterious and beautiful. It was built over 500 years ago by the Inca indians, probably as a sacred retreat for the great Inca ruler Pachicuti.

Entrance to the site

The Temple of the Sun overlooks farming terraces and the river below. An upthrusted rock is carved as an altar. The mortarless walls are built from perfectly fitted stones.

Terraces at the north end of the plaza may have been gardens for potatoes, beans and peppers. Steep, thatched roofs were typical of the residences in Machu Picchu.
