Machu Picchu
|
|||||||||
High in the Andes Mountains of Peru, hidden by clouds, Machu Picchu is remote, mysterious and beautiful. It was built over 500 years ago by the Inca indians, probably as a sacred retreat for the great Inca ruler Pachicuti. |
Entrance to the site |
The Temple of the Sun overlooks farming terraces and the river below. An upthrusted rock is carved as an altar. The mortarless walls are built from perfectly fitted stones. |

North end of the plaza |
Terraces at the north end of the plaza may have been gardens for potatoes, beans and peppers. Steep, thatched roofs were typical of the residences in Machu Picchu. |
