New CASAC Regulations Released From OASAS
The new regulations should be effective by the end of February 1997
with testing dates of June 14th and September 13th, 1997. The immediate
benefits for credentialed counselors in New York will be reciprocity in
39 states, all branches of the military, the Indian Health Services, Canada,
Sweden and Germany. Following are the new requirements
EDUCATION AND TRAINING
A total of 350 clock hours of education/training
must be acquired in four categories of coursework including: 1)Knowledge
of alcoholism and substance abuse (85 hours minimum); 2) Alcoholism and
substance abuse counseling (150 hours minimum); 3) Assessment, clinical
evaluation, treatment planning, case management and patient/community education
(70 hours minimum); and 4) Professional and ethical responsibilities and
documentation (45 hours minimum).
WORK EXPERIENCE
In the area of work experience, applicants will be required to document three years of appropriate full-time work experience in an approved work setting. One year can be voluntary (non-paid) experience. applicants with a Bachelor's of Master's Degree in a human services field may substitute their degree for one year of work experience (for Bachelor's Degree) or two years of work experience (for Master's Degree.)
