Colors & Fonts

"Don't Overdo the Fonts. Remember that people viewing your web site may not have the same fonts you do, so the fancy fonts you use  may not be seen by your audience. In addition, using more than two or three fonts on a page, especially fonts that vary widely in appearance, can have a jarring effect and always shouts 'Amateur!" (1)

"Remember also that users have different preferences with respect to font size, so ensure your designs work well with both larger and smaller fonts than your personal preferences. People may use different fonts because of a visual disability, or they may simply have a high-resolution screen on which small font sizes are too tiny to be readable." (3, pg. 29)

Beware use of colors, too. If you need to change a font's color for emphasis, or fill the background in a table's cell, stick with the default colors provided, and stay away from the temptation to click on "more colors" to get a large palette of options. The default colors should work with almost all browsers; colors picked from the "more colors" palette may cause strange things to happen in some browsers.

Also be sure that there is good contrast between the font colors and the background color. If your background is light, keep the font colors relatively dark, and if the background is dark, keep the font colors relatively light.
