Elmendorf AFB, Alaska

All of the family photos on this page and the linked pages were scanned from 35mm slides.

After a quick second tour at Altus, I was assigned to Elmendorf AFB, Alaska. First I was with the 71st Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Squadron where we worked on all sorts of interesting versions of the C-130. They even had "D" model C-130s up there. The "D"s had skis!!! I learned to love the Hercs. Another great assignment. Then I was transferred to the 602nd Military Airlift Support Squadron on the same base. In the 602nd, we worked 12 hour shifts, three days on, three days off. What a fantastic shift for someone who loved to hunt and fish!!! I took a lot of pics up there, but they are all 35mm slides. I'll have to find a way to get them scanned. At work, we took care of all of the enroute C-141s and C-5s that were hauling troops and supplies to and from Vietnam. Friends, "you ain't seen nuthin'" until you see a C-5 or a C-141 returning from a war zone with several pallets of coffins on board. That will knock the wind right out of you. I made TSgt (E-6) at Elmendorf. That was the toughest stripe for me to make.

I can not say too much about the recreational opportunities in Alaska. I took full advantage of my days off. Below are a few photos from Alaska. There are photos of "Sherman" and me. Sherman was a 1954 Chevy that I drove all over up there. I would put the Honda ATC-90 in the back, and when Sherman got stuck, I would just unload the Honda, and keep on going. Can you tell who is in Sherman, peeking over my sholder??? That is Sean. Next is a picture of Tom on the Honda, then two different shots of Sean and Brian. That is mount McKinley in the background. The last photo is of the three of them at a motel swimming pool somewhere on the trip back from Alaska. I didn't know where else to put this pic, and it is just too cute to not share.... right, guys????

In November, 2004, I finally got around to scanning more of my 35mm slides that I shot in Alaska. Click on the links below to see some of those photos. Click "Back" on your browser to return to this page:
