About Boost
Boost works in conjunction with CURE and Golisano Children's Hospital at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, N.Y.
Boost, which provides supplementary tutoring for children with cancer, is comprised mostly of retired teachers.
Linda Bolan, a retired teacher with over 40 years of experience founded boost in 2008 soon after her grandson, Willem David Bolan, died from Infant Leukemia on October 4, 2007, at the age of 8 months. Willem was diagnosed at six weeks with Leukemia and died after his bone marrow transplant at Golisano Children’s Hospital.
The Oncology Education Liaison for children with cancer at Strong Memorial Hospital explained to Linda that the tutor from a school does not always have the expertise to actually teach what the child needs to know to do the work at home. Also, children with cancer are from many areas near, but not necessarily in Rochester. Therefore, many tutors are needed not only from Rochester, but also from surrounding counties and the southern tier. This is where the “Boost” group of teachers comes in.
