South Maple Grove The Maple Grove School District which was located north of Rutland, was created in 1881, following the separation of the Rutland School District and the Maple Grove Districts. The Maple Grove School District consisted of three schools, North, South and West Maple Grove, all located within two miles of each other. They were so named for the many maple trees in the surrounding area. Pictured above is the South Maple school building, built in 1937. The first South Maple Grove School was held in 1873, in a granary. The first school bulding was built in 1879. It was later razed and replaced with the building pictured above. Do to declining enrollment, South Maple Grove was closed in 1952 and the students then attended the Humboldt schools. In 1957 the school building was sold and later dismantled. Every two years, neighbors, teachers and former students of the three schools, South, North and West Maple Grove, gather for a potluck picnic reunion in Humboldt. This year's reunion will be held Sunday, July 10, at the Senior Citizens Center, beginning at 12:30 p.m. (From Humboldt newspaper, June 30, 1994) |
