E3 2003: Metal Gear Solid 3 - Snake Eater Publisher: Konami Developer: Konami
Release Date: Christmas 2003
Platform: PS2 written by Joe Asphahani
That’s right, folks. The rumors were true. Using the Gamecube MGS, Twin Snakes, as a cover-up for that “new Metal Gear” game everyone was whispering about was a good move by Konami. The 15-minute long trailer of MGS3 was the first thing I saw at the show. In this game, Snake takes a little break from the snow and ocean settings of the first two games and goes right back where a true snake belongs: the jungle. My first guess was MGS3 would be a remake of the old NES games, and be set in Zanzibar. Details are sketchy on the plot of the game at this point, but the soldiers Snake killed in the jungle were definitely Russian. A Cold War setting perhaps?
One scene showed Snake silently swing from a tree branch and head shoot two rear guards, then jump down on the last one. Another put him in the midst of an intense gunfight. Enemies look to be a lot smarter this time around, as they took turns firing at him from all angles, scrambled to get into position, and backed him up into unpleasant spots with grenades. While I didn’t get to play MGS3 (no one did), it’s apparent from what I saw that the overall feel of the new title isn’t any different than MGS1 or 2. That, and Hideo Kojima is once again on the project, despite his denials of getting involved in MGS again. But, why bother giving MGS a new feel when the game has worked so well in the past? The choice is up to you, gamer-guy. Let’s just hope the story is a bit more diluted and comprehensible this time around…
