Line bore or hone main bearing bores so the crankshaft will run straight and all
bearings will fit the crankshaft perfectly. This is absolutely critical since most everything will be aligned to the crankshaft.
Next, we will square deck the block. A process that that will
insure the deck will be parallel with the crankshaft the same distance from the top of the deck to the center of the crankshaft, front, rear and both sides.
The cylinders are next. Some horse power can be gained by using a torque plate. A torque plate is a cast steel plate that is bored just over cylinder size equipped with holes for all head bolts or studs. A head gasket is then placed between the cylinder block and the torque plate. The head bolts or studs are torqued in sequence to apply the same stress the head will experience when it is assembled. This distorts the cylinders out of round. If they are then bored and honed they will be round and straight when the head is finally installed.
