Radiation
RACHEL'S ROAD
Radiation
Here I am showing off my "cross".  This is what they used to line me up so that the radiation beams would hit the same place every time.  You can also see some of my scars.  The scar about two inches under my arm is from my lung surgery.  The round healing wound is from where the chest tube was during my lung surgery and recovery.  The scar on the left side of my tummy is from where they closed my g-tube site.  You can hardly see the scar that goes from my bellybutton up to my rib cage as it's almost a year old.  My port is about two inches above my left breast and has scars from being accessed so many times (you can see what looks like a bruise in the picture).  My rash also shows up somewhat on this picture.
Here I am getting prepared for radiation.  Blake and Lance came with this day and liked to help me get ready.  They thought the laser beams coming from the walls to help with the positioning were like Star Wars.  Julie and Brenda were my technicians the entire time.  The machine would start on top of me for the positioning and then move around to the bottom.
Here the machine is moving to the bottom.
Now the machine is on the bottom--in starting position.  The radiation lasts for one minute in this position and then it moves back to the top and radiates for one minute in that position.  I have to lay completely still the entire time.  If I move (like I did once to itch my nose) they stop the radiation IMMEDIATELY and then continue after they've come back into the room to check my position.  Here Julie is just making some last minute adjustments before everyone leaves the room.  They all go out an 8-inch thick door and go into a room right next to this one and watch me on a tv screen.  I'm a star!
