The
aft hatch frames supplied with the kit had a 24 inch radius. The aft deck
has a flatter 48 inch radius, leaving a gap. I disassembled the hatch cover
and planed the frames down to 48 inch radius, eliminating the gap. This
may not have been necessary. According to the CLC staff, this tighter radius
was to provide more purchase for the hatch straps, and the seal would compress
to make up the difference.
I drilled
several 3/8 inch holes in each hatch frame, and countersunk heavily. The
hatch frame kit provided more 6mm scrap with which to fabricate eight "padeyes".
The padeyes
were epoxied in place, with a layer of bias-cut fiberglass over each. Later,
these were carefully sanded to reduce chafing of the shock cord. Next,
the shock cord was assembled to the proper lengths. To get in to the hatch,
the edge is pried up, and one hook is taken off. After that, access is
easy. They seem secure and water-tight so far.
