The smith's shop

The smith has a small smithy in the woods besides his homestead. He is the best smith in the fjord, devoting much of his free time to becoming a master of metal. During the long winter, a hot and fiery forge is a good companion, and the smith will spend hours learning the subtleties of melting working.

His renown in smithing is growing because of this, and raiders from the neighboring fjords prize his weapons above others. Most of the time, they willingly recompense him for his work. Indeed, with the bounty they trade him for his handiwork, he needs less time to hunt, fish, farm and raid, and his family is prospering.

He doesn't always take game, crops or cattle in exchange for his goods. He also needs iron, strange metals, and wood for his forge. Skystone he prizes above all, and will trade a long worked sword for a fist sized piece of the metal that comes from the sky.

Inside the smithy, you can see the Smith heating up a sword by holding it over his fiery forge, bellows in his hand. He will heat the sword until it glows a certain color, he must keep his door and shutters closed so that outside light doesn't blind to heating to the correct yellow.

Behind him are shelves of rare ingots of various irons, including a few precious pieces of skystone, and some clay for coating the blade. To the smith's right are two barrels, one of water, one of oil, used for quenching a hot blade.

Once the metal has been heated, the smith goes to his anvil to beat it into shape.

He may spend days heating and pounding a sword until it has become flexible, strong and sharp.

Across from his anvil you can see shovels waiting for to be picked up. The thin, rocky glacial soil punishes shovels, and makes raiding an easier lifestyle than farming, so the smith makes fewer shovels than swords and spears.
