Description Death of Quinton Richard Hayden

Narrative

According to the Army Air Force's Missing Air Crew Report number 4936, Quinton R. Hayden's B24 was going on a bombing run from the 579th Squadron's home base of Wendling Station, England to their target of Brunswick Germany on the 19th of May 1944. According to report #KU1894 from the Luftwaffe's Air Base Headquarters A(o) 13/III Quinton's aircraft, #474, was “shot-down by fighter” 21-1/2km north of Wernigerode at 1400 Hrs and the aircraft “exploded in mid-air”. According to the German report, there were 6 (six) casualties found and only 4 (four) identified, interment of all the casualties, according to the report, was carried out 19 May 1944, 2200 Hrs at the cemetery in nearby Veltheim. The 4 (four) identified remains were all named in the report, there were 2 (two) remains that were unidentified. Quinton Hayden was not among the named remains, this leaves 4 (four) remains missing as there were 10 (ten) men in the crew. With 6 (six) remains either unidentified or missing I cannot say if Quinton was buried in Veltheim.
