Narrative

The life of John J. Hayden is a little obscure, for a man that had a large family there is little known about him. I know from the census reports, and death certificates of some of his children, that he was born in Louisiana. I know from the same sources that John's father was born in Pennsylvania and his mother in Louisiana. I can find no documents with the name of either of his parents.
John was in Georgia as of 1878, when he married Ella Stone in Hall county. I will be sending a request out to the Hall county library to get a copy of the marriage certificate, but the certificate, according to the librarian, will not have the names of his parents.
There were a few family stories about John being a gold miner and how he died out west on the way back from a mine and was buried in Grant's Pass Oregon. All of this was confirmed by the estate case file from the Oregon State Archives. According to the case file, John had owned the "Slide Gulch Quicksilver Mine" and sold it to J.H. Carlton for $7000.00, which would be paid by a percentage of the proceeds from the mining operation as performed by J.H. Carlton. There was at least part ownership in two other mines as well as a sum of money in a bank account. After the death of John Hayden there was a lot of wrangling over who had the right to be the administrator of the estate. There were also lots of persons showing up a year later to file claims with the court that John owed them money. After some years of everyone charging for there time "administering" the estate, being paid for "ear trumpets", teeth being pulled, hotel stays, etc., the value of the estate was $00.46. After it was depleted there seemed to be no more interest in the estate of John Hayden.
