E. Buckley Hancock, 88, husband of Margaret Cannon Smith Hancock, died peacefully at home
surrounded by his family on Friday, Feb. 25 after a short illness.

Born April 14, 1916, in the Gluck Mill community of Anderson, South Carolina, he was the
son of the late Hosea Cleveland Hancock and the late Julia Ivester Hancock. He grew up in
Orr Mill and left home at the age of 14 during the Great Depression. He supported himself
as a boxer, "Kid Buckley," a clerk at the Salvation Army, a manufacturer and salesman of
blinds for his own company, "Buckley Venetian Blinds." He was a private pilot. He was the
owner of Boscobel Golf Course from 1956 until 1987 and a real estate developer and
homebuilder of Boscobel Manor, Pendleton, and Buckley Venetian Farms, Paint Branch Farms,
Springbrook, East Springbrook and several other communities in Montgomery County, Maryland.
He built the first high-rise office building in Silver Spring, Maryland, and was a
consultant for Operations Research, Inc. in Silver Spring. He was the owner of Tanglewood
in Pendleton and original donor of that property to the town of Pendleton in the mid 1980s
to be used for a library. He was a member of the Sandy Spring (Maryland) Friends Meeting (
Quakers).

He will be missed by his wife of 57 years, and by his brother, Robert Hancock and wife,
Norma, of Anderson; sister-in-law, Joy R. Hancock, of Anderson; son, Kenneth Downs Hancock
and his wife, Mary, of Pendleton; daughters Elizabeth Cannon H. Brooks and her husband,
Jeffrey, of Pendleton, Margaret Julia H. Stoudenmire and her husband, Mark, of Knoxville,
Tennessee, Allison Wheeler H. Padgett and her husband, the Rev. Dr. Frank Padgett, of
Cullowhee, North Carolina, and Leslie Knox H. Baggott and her husband, Kevin, of
Westminster, Maryland; and by his friend of many years, Harvey Brock of Anderson. He also
leaves loving grandchildren, Capt. Robert Brooks and his wife, Jennifer, of Clovis, N.M.,
Matthew Brooks of Fort Worth, Texas, Lauren Hancock of Durham, N.C., Lisa Hancock, Richard
Buckley Hancock, and Christopher Hancock of Pendleton, Kenneth Ivester Stoudenmire of
Philadelphia, Pa., Victoria Stoudenmire and Elizabeth Stoudenmire of Knoxville, Tenn.,
Steven Gentile of Cullowhee, N.C., and Tyler Baggott of Westminster, Maryland. He was
predeceased by brothers Walter Hancock, Charles Hancock, Frank Hancock, and Alton Hancock;
and sisters Arzelia Hancock, Vermelle H. Grishaw and Muriel H. Richey.

A memorial service will be held at Pendleton First Baptist Church today at 3 p.m., followed
by a reception at Boscobel Club House. Memorials may be made to Sandy Springs Friends
