Narrative
Doris Kathleen Reeves Swilling, 73, of 40 Simpson St., widow of Ollie Swilling, U.S. Air Force,
retired, died Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002, at her home.
Born in Piedmont, she was a daughter of the late Dock Hester and Essie Lee Brown Reeves. She
was a homemaker and a member of Tremont Avenue Church of God.
Surviving are a daughter, Wanda Williams of Piedmont; three sons, Stanley D. Swilling of San
Diego, Calif., O. Kim Swilling of the home, John Eric Swilling of Myrtle Beach;. three special
children, Amir Khezrnejat of Piedmont, Jonathan Shaw of Timmonsville, Julia Davis of Anderson;
four brothers, Jamie Reeves of Greenville, Jerry Reeves, Dan Reeves of Piedmont, Wayne Reeves
of Greenwood; two sisters, Nettie R. Wilson, Ann Weisner of Piedmont; and seven grandchildren.
Rich beyond description with friends, family and faith, Doris Swilling was a generous person who
never met a stranger. She was hostess at Bojangles on West Faris Between 1999 and 2001, and at
Burger King from 1970 into the 80's. For over 30 years she was a sales vendor at Tabb's and White
Horse Road flea markets. With her love for good people and good conversations these jobs enabled
her to make and enjoy friends from all walks of life. But by far, her most valued and important
endeavor was her job as wife and mother. Beginning as a teenage bride, she traveled with her young
family in the military and delighted in making a home for her husband and children wherever they
lived. During this time, the legacy of love she learned as a child was passed down to her children
and grandchildren. She will be genuinely missed by many. In addition to those mentions, she
leaves behind her grandchildren, Christy Williams Batson, Wesley Swilling and Josh, Gabe and Zach
Swilling, Katie and Nick Swilling.
She was predeceased by a sister, Marie Reeves; and brothers, Truman Reeves, Charlie Reeves, Mack
Reeves, Joe Reeves, John Reeves, Hovie Reeves, Willie Reeves, Bennett Reeves and Roy Reeves.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Gray Mortuary Chapel with Revs. Ron Thomas and John
Eric Swilling officiating. Burial will follow in Greenville Memorial Gardens.
The family is at the home and will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Gray Mortuary.
