The Hines Family in America

The Hines family came to America circa 1850 from Germany. They initially settled in Michigan in the Paw Paw area. They have spread out from Michigan and, in the 1960s, lived in Akron, Ohio, Chicago, Illinois, Rochester, New York and New York City, among others.

It is believed that the name Hines was 'Americanized' once the family arrived. The original spelling was probably Heintz.

1. JOHN HEINTZ was born November 17, 1844 in Germany, and died December 22, 1908 in Michigan. He married CATHERINE COVER June 23, 1870 in Bath, Summit, Ohio. She was born August 09, 1847 in Bath, Summit, Ohio, and died June 23, 1900 in Michigan.

3. CHARLES WILLIAM HINES (JOHN HEINTZ) was born July 07, 1877 in Paw Paw, Michigan, and died March 12, 1951 in Penn Yan, Yates County, New York. He married GENIE RUDD, daughter of GEORGE RUDD and ELLEN EARLE. She was born January 22, 1880 in Yates County, New York, and died 1957 in Rochester, Monroe County, New York. CHARLES WILLIAM HINES: worked for BF Goodrich in Ohio and was a farmer in New York

When asked about her family's origin, Genie Rudd always said that they were 'American'. The Rudd name could have originated either in France or Germany. He son's autobiography, From Prosperity to Depression, states "Mother was of Dutch descent and Dad was of German descent."
