HALFLING: THE HALFLING RACE
Halflings are about 3 feet tall and usually weigh around 30 to 35 pounds, though the fatter ones might reach 60 to 80 pounds, easy (but such opulent loving individuals rarely become adventurers).
Halflings generally have brown or black eyes, and their hair is usually of the same color as their eyes (brown and brown, or black and black, and never, for some odd reason, brown and black or black and brown). However, on very rare occasions, blue eyed blondes appear in the population. Such blue eyed halflings are almost, without fail, left-handed. No one knows why. The remaining population is evenly split between left and right handed individuals, though ambidexterity is more common in this race than any other PC race. Yet the gender line has woman 60% left-handed, 35% right handed, and 5% ambidextrous, while the males are 35% left-handed, 60% right handed, and 5% ambidextrous.
Hedonistic in the extreme, they love life and the pleasures that go along with it, and will do much to gain them or be party to them. They mostly love fine food and drink, tobacco, fine cloths, good music and poetry and stories. Any wealth they may accumulate is most often immediately spent toward improving their comfort or improving their homes, and is not generally hoarded.
Halflings reach majority in their mid twenties (25) and often live to 140 to 160 years old (though rare few have made it barely past 200).
As halflings love change and excitement (and sometimes look for mischief and trouble) they prefer human societies to any other race (other than their own) and believe humans understand and share most of their hedonistic tendencies more than any other race. But they freely mix within Human, Dwarven, and Gnomish cultures, the latter two as similarities in size and stature are not to be underestimated.
Religion: The chief religion is of the goddess Yondella, the blessed one, protector of halflings. They pay homage to other deities since they need them, particular deities of good luck, fortune, travel, and pleasure.
HALFLING RACIAL TRAITS
(Add these if your PC's race is Halfling)
+2 DEX
-2 STR
Small: As small creatures, halflings gain +1 size bonus to Armor Class, a +1 size bonus on attack rolls, and a +4 bonus on Hide Checks. But they must use smaller weapons than humans typically use, and their lifting and carrying limits are only 75% of those of normal medium sized creatures.
Base Speed 20 feet
+2 on all Climb, Jump, and Move Silent rolls (as they are agile, sure footed, and athletic).
+2 on all Listen rolls (they have keen hearing).
+1 to all saving throws (as they are surprisingly able to avoid mishaps).
+1 moral bonus on saving throws vs. fear (they lack as active an adrenal gland as other races and keep their calm better). This bonus stacks with other saving throw bonuses.
Ambidexterity: (If your PC has a DEX of 15 or more after the +2 DEX adjustment, there is a 5% chance they have this feat for free. If they roll 20 on 1d20, they are ambidextrous. If not, they may acquire the feat as normal later. The DM must witness this roll or it doesn't count and must be rolled again).
HALFLING CULTURAL TRAITS
(Add these if your PC grew up in a Halfling culture)
+1 moral bonus on saving throws vs. fear (yes, again) as their cultural spirit mocks the cowardly and they learn to show more backbone as a point of honor. (This bonus also stacks with the other racial one, if you have that, as well as the general saving throw bonus, if you have that).
+1 attack bonus with thrown weapons and slings (growing up in halfling culture, darts, throwing stones, using slings, and developing a good aim with such things is a sign of maturity and a point of pride).
Languages: Common and Halfling (though the Halfling language is different from Common, it uses the same script). They may also have access to Dwarven, Elven, Gnomish, Goblin, and Orcish.
Favored Class: +500 XP to the class of Rogue at 1st level IF this is their first class. Furthermore, +5% for all xp gained toward the Rogue class only as long as this is their only class. If they ever multiclass, they will no longer get this +5% xp bonus.
