Possible House Rules For 3rd Edition Dungeons & Dragons.
MY INTENTIONS AND PURPOSEIt occurs to me that if I waited until I was 100% ready to start making comments on how to fix some problems in 3rd edition D&D, that it would still be months before I posted anything out there (I do have other things on my plate). I'd rather not wait that long. Nor do I feel I'm the only one who may have something noteworthy to say about the new edition of Dungeons & Dragons. Thus, I'll be taking Email submissions left and right (if you send them) about the 3e PHB and/or the 3e DMG, and then I'll post them after review if they make the grade. Until this line is deleted or this article goes away, I'll be here reading your submissions, so please send them in. In actual practice, what will likely happen is I'll read your submission, consider them, and write back to you, perhaps starting a conversation with you about the proposed house rule. After a little give and take we may finally both agree upon a good house rule. If so, then I'll publish it. Naturally, I can't promise each submission will be published, but I'll try to be open minded and fair and try to work with anyone who sends in a submission. Thank you. Send Your SubmissionEmail Jim Your Comments (Send Praise, Critique, Complaints, Suggestions, Ideas, or Submissions). NOTE: Please do not be mislead by these pages showing one mistake after another and calling for corrections or better methods. Since no where on these pages will you see the vast majority of 3e that is OK as it is, you might get the idea someone is unfairly picking on 3e. This is not what is happening. All editions have problems. Simply because these pages just concentrate on those weak points doesn't mean there isn't anything good to say about 3e. There certainly is; it just won't be said on these House Rule pages. Submission should sharply focus on errors, problems, inconsistencies, quirks, and yes, even personal preferences that you think would be better than the official rule. In short, the intention is to craft a list of HOUSE RULES. You know, those little fixes we DMs almost insist would make the game better (for whatever reason). Hopefully, with such a handy list readily available, it will help all DMs find good ideas to make the 3e rules work even better. Keep in mind that one need not agree with every fix or House Rule here to find some fixes may have value for their own game. Just take what you like. And if you like a proposed House Rule but your DM doesn't play that way already, ask him if he will. He may surprise you. It doesn't matter how minor the problem is, or how major, but only that you would have written it differently if you had the opportunity. Now you have that opportunity. How many viewers you will reach, I cannot guess, but you'll reach a darn sight more than if you send nothing in. House Rules should be considered strong suggestions. If you wish to justify your house rule and can do it in 500 words or less, please do. I'll either place it with your House Rule in Italics or link directly to it on the REASONING page. If you read a House Rule that you think wouldn't make the game better (as you can see some flaw in it), feel free to say so. If you think your House Rule is better, send it in. If you think a House Rule is good but it could be better, suggest further refinement and submit it. The page will be updated as frequently as I am able to get to it. As this is a test idea, it may not work as well as I hope. I may eventually have to take it down or try to craft House Rules in a different form, or distillate the best ones to form a comprehensive list of House Rules. So, for now, if you thought of something you'd like to say, saw a mistake, wished they would have done it differently, or what have you, send me some email. Or, if you've seen a House Rule anywhere on the web you particularly like that you don't see here, it doesn't matter if it is yours or not. Go get it, paste it in a letter, and submit it. Email Jim Your Comments (Send Praise, Critique, Complaints, Suggestions, Ideas, or Submissions). Remember, it can be anything you wish was in the PHB or the DMG. A rule, a suggestion, a better explanation, a magic spell correction, relaxed restrictions, strengthened restrictions, different wording, etc., etc., etc. The game has countless possibilities and so too will the number of possible House Rules be boundless. The House Rules will follow the PHB or the DMG page by page. If no rules are submitted for a particular page, that page will not appear. You can easily find what you are looking for by scrolling right down to the clearly written page numbers. Use the chapter links at the top and the bottom to help. SUBMISSION GUIDELINESA.) In the email topic or subject line, place "3e House Rule." B.) Quote the relevant passage or sentence from the 3e PHB or the DMG. C.) Be sure to include the Page Number. D.) Type in what the book "should" say. This will probably appear in bold letters after I edit it. E.) Offer any justification you feel might help sell your House Rule as better than the standard rule. F.) Send only one proposed House Rule per email, but send as many emails as you want. END SUBMISSION GUIDELINES: Email Jim Your Comments (Send Praise, Critique, Complaints, Suggestions, Ideas, or Submissions). Apologies, at first, since the list is exceedingly barren right now. I have lots more, but haven't had time to put them all in yet. And I'm still reading the PHB and the DMG, so I'll keep adding things as I go. After I get 20 outside submissions, I'll take this paragraph out. But until then, bear with me while these House Rules grow from their infancy. Those I have included are just those to set the tone and format for now. Email Jim Your Comments (Send Praise, Critique, Complaints, Suggestions, Ideas, or Submissions).
