Kumagai Naozane: |
Kumagai Naozane, a mighty general of the Genji (Minamoto clan), slew Taira no Atsumori, a young nobleman of the
rival Heike (Taira clan), in a battle at the Bay of Suma. This historical fact was dramatized in a fictitious plot
in the well-known play Ichinotani Futaba Gunki (Ichinotani War Chronicle), in which Kumagai, out of
compassion for the enchanting grace of the youth, sacrifices his own son Kojiro as a subsititute. Before leaving
for the front, Kumagai had been given by his master, Minamoto no Yoshitsune, together with a blossoming cherry
branch, a tablet on which was inscribed This blossom is never found in the Konan area. Kumagai interpreted
this as his master's wish to save the life of the scion of the nobility, whom his master compared to that of a
cherry blossom in the area. In sparing the life of Atsumori, Kumagai desperately resorted to the trick of making
his son a scapegoat for Atsumori. The blossom in this drama is the cherry, but the wording this blossom used
in classical literature signifies a plum. Kumagai and plum blossoms were combined in this context. The actor portraying Kumagai is Nakamura Shikan IV.
