This is certainly not one of the most difficult things to do, but here's a few pics of the process.
The Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor is a critical component of the Ford gas engines. If this sensor gets dirty it can cause problems such as stumbling/hesitation on acceleration, poor idle, and even reduced fuel economy. Its a good idea to periodically clean this sensor.
The MAF sensor is inside the intake duct work. To access this sensor, you first have to separate this ductwork the same way you would to check/replace the air filter.
Pull the ductwork up enough so you can easily see/access the MAF sensor.
Here's a close-up of the MAF sensor.
Use a suitable electronic cleaner and spray the sensor element to clean it. Whatever you do, DO NOT touch it! The element is very delicate plus the oil from your skin will not be good for it. Do not try to dry it with a rag, cloth, or cotton swab... just let it air dry.
Mine looked pretty good but I sprayed it anyway. I used CRC brand quick dry electronic cleaner.
Allow plenty of time to dry, then reassemble the air intake in the reverse order it was disassembled.
