bullet  General Notes:

THE LINDSTROM FAMILY
John and Anna Lindstrom were my grandparents. John Lindstrom was born in Jemtland, Sweden on June 26th, 1884. His wife Anna Lindstrom (Larson) was born Oct. 4th, 1832. They both immigrated to North Dakota, U.S.A. in May of 1891. They filed for a homestead. John worked very hard to get 30 acres of land broken, and managed to get it done in 3 years time. With help, John also started a grocery store. He could exchange food for labor. The settlers would get themost needed groceries such as coffee, sugar, salt, flour, etc. People then used a lot of snuff so John would grind up tobacco leaves and mix it up for number 1 snuff. Back then you wouldn't get fancy cigarettes.
Transportation in those days was not as easy as now. Oxen were the main style of transportation. In those days, people didn't buy many new machines. If possible, they got what they could afford, well-used old machinery. John was a very good blacksmith and he did a lot of sharpening plow shares and other necessary tools. John and Anna Lindstrom decided to move to Canada in 1901, where they settled in the old Kinistino site. John started up a blacksmith shop and a restaurant, a building that was later moved to the new Kinistino Site and used as a drugstore. Later, it was Mr. Graham's office until he exchanged it for a new modern building.
Their next move was to the homestead 5 miles northeast of Kinistino. John kept himself busy with the blacksmith job, brushing, breaking the team of oxen and caring for his cows and chickens.
John and Anna Lindstrom had 11 children of whom 3 made their homes in the U.S.A., later moving to Canada. One of the children, Oscar Lindstrom, we well known for his carpenter and cement work.
Otto and Elida Lindstrom's home was also 5 miles northeast of Kinistino. They had one son, Arne, born in 1917. Arne had good opportunities to learn the English language before the family decided to move back to Sweden in 1932. Arne has become proficient in 5 different languages. Those languages were necessary before he could become a teacher. Arne never married; it seems he will be the last one of the Lindstroms.
My grandmother, Anna Lindstrom, passed away Jan. 22, 1930 and my grandfather on April 19, 1932. [Alma Johanson Sjolin, in Kinistino book, pp. 360-61]
