The goal of the Victor Junior High Enrichment program is
to expose as many students as possible to a variety of learning experiences
that go beyond the normal curriculum. It is
not a Gifted and Talented
program. Students do
not need to score well on standardized tests
to participate in the Enrichment classes.
There are three main aspects to the program:
1. Enrichment classes: Mr. McDonnell
teaches several different classes from a variety of standard areas. Any
student who has a study hall during the time the class is offered can join
the class. The established classes include
Digital/ Video Photography,
Traditional Photography, School Newspaper, Science Olympiad, World of Water,
and
Stock Market Game. In the 2003-2004 school year, new
classes will be offered depending on interest. They include
Drama, Geography
in the 21st Century, and
Documenting our Veterans.
If you want any information about these offerings,
go back to the Home Page, and click on the
links to those pages.
2. "Push-in" Opportunities: One of
Mr. McDonnell's responsibilities is to assist classroom teachers in providing
enrichment opportunities for their classes. Scheduling is often an obstacle,
but we are trying to expand these offerings in the coming year. In the past
Mr. McDonnell has co-taught lessons in Social Studies 8 (the Photography
of Lewis Hine and the Depression photographers) and Language Arts 8 (the
S.N.A.P. program and the Geography of Jack London's
Call of the
Wild). One of the top priorities for the 2003-2004 school year is to
design activities for 7th graders.
Visit the
Programs with Other Teachers page
to find out more about these offerings.
3. Activity Period: Mr. McDonnell has
worked with the Partner in Education (PIE) group to organize two clubs that
meet during Activity Period (2:17-2:55 PM) throughout the year: Art Club
and Chess Club. Mrs. Carol Urbanic and Mrs. Kathy Hart have taken on the
responsibility of running the show. They have brought in guest artists, and
they organized chess tournaments. Any Junior High student is welcome to join
these two clubs. If there is an interest, there might be additional offerings
made for the Activity Period.
