Traditional Photography…
investigating the beauty of the visual image
Both of these black-and-white images were taken with a 35 mm camera,
and they were developed in the school darkroom
by the students of the spring 2003 Traditional Photography class. The
photo on the left is of Katie Spawton, and the picture on the right shows
the reflections of Zach Angus and Phil McGrath in an icy-puddle.
In this course, students explore the whole of classic photography. Although
they learn some modern digital techniques,
most of their experience is with black-and-white film and paper. Emphasis
is placed on
• Composition: What makes a picture work!(
More is not necessarily
better.)
• Using the 35 mm camera: Going beyond the Auto Mode.
• The chemistry of developing black-and-white photographs: What is correct
darkroom technique?
• Improving the quality of images: Practice makes perfect (or at least,
almost)
• Mounting and displaying images: the Great Photographic Exposition (April
2004)
This is class is open to all interested 7th and 8th grade students. Class
size is limited by the size of the darkroom,
which we share with the Senior High School.
