George Harvey Shup

Mary Elizabeth Shup Yingst's Great Uncle

George Harvey Shup was born in Highland County, Ohio, October 3, 1833; moved when quite young with his mother to Hancock County, Indiana; came to Jasper County, Illinois, with his brothers and sisters, about 1853 locating near Newton, but going back to Indiana and then returning here in 1862 or 1863; was married to Elsie C. Brooks, April 12, 1865; and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. E.W. Hersch, in this city, Thursday, November 3, 1910, at 11:15 a.m., aged 77 years and one month. Deceased was prominently identified with the growth and progress of Jasper County for nearly or quite a half-century, residing here continuously excepting while absent in Indiana, as mentioned, and a period of two or three years when he practiced medicine in Altamont soon after the Vandalia railroad was built through there.

Mr. Shup was a man of splendid education and in his earlier manhood was a teacher, acting several times a superintendent of the Newton schools. Later he entered the medical profession and for a while was in active and successful practice.

He was never in robust health, yet his untiring industry and intelligent business ability enabled him to succeed where many others failed, and when in the early 70's, there was a general inclination to abandon Jasper County and go west, he invested his accumulations in the city and county real estate, which grew in value from year to year. These with other investments of equally good judgement gave him a rating among the most well-to-do of our people.

For quiet, unostentatious manners, and kind, genial disposition, he was especially noted. His attachment were strong and few friends would do more for those whom he had faith in and thought well of personally than Mr. Shup. This trait of character made his warm and lasting friendships and his demise will be sincerely mourned by many persons who knew him as a generous helper in need.

Mrs. Shup departed this life in October 18, 1901, after which Mr.Shup resided with one or the other of his daughters, Mrs. A.F. (Eva)Calvin and Mrs. E.W. (Flora) Hersch. These two children survive out of a family of four girls, the other two dying in infancy. In addition there is one grand daughter, Marjorie Hersch; brother J. Wesley Shup, of Smallwood township; sister, Mrs. James (Mary) Phillips of Redkey, Indiana, nephews and nieces and numerous other relatives, among the former, the editor of the Press.

Early last spring Mr. Shup had a severe attack of rheumatism. From this he rallied and was able to be up, but continued to be frail and quite feeble. About five weeks ago he became ill and gradually became weaker until spirit was called to it's maker and the mind and body were at rest.

Funeral services at Grace M.E. church, Saturday, November 5, at 10 a.m. Rev. L.W. Porter to be in charge, and interment at Riverside.
