Mary Elizabeth Shup's Great Uncle


Isaac Shup was a Civil War veteran and a member of the Illinois Legislature.

He was born in Indiana, Highland County, Sept. 6, 1837. His parents were Jacob and Elizabeth Harvey Shup who were born in Greene County, Pennsylvania. Jacob a was born in 1787 and died in Ohio Sept. 11, 1839 at age of 52 years. Mrs. Elizabeth Harvey Shup moved to Hancock County, Indiana with the children in 1849 and live to there until 1853 when she came with her children in two Jasper County, Illinois. She died there Sept. 12, 1858. Jacob and Elizabeth Shup were farmers.

Isaac Shup farmed. On May 11, 1861 he enlisted in Co. K., 21st Illinois infantry commanded by General U. S. Grant. He was made first Sergeant and later first lieutenant (never commission as first lieutenant) Sgt. Shup was in the following battles of the Civil War: Fredericktown, Missouri, Siege of Corinth, battle of Stone River, (where he received a gunshot wound in the leg), Perryville, Kentucky, Chickamauga, in 4th Army Corps at siege and capture of Atlanta, Lovejoy, Jonesboro, Spring Hill, Franklin, Tennessee; Nashville, Tennessee (Dec. 15, 1864, where he was wounded in left arm and permanently disabled); he was discharged at Camp Butler, Springfield, Illinois, Aug. 31, 1865.

Isaac Shup married Annie Brooks Oct. 5, 1867 at Newton, Illinois. Her parents were John and Mary Barrett Brooks. Annie was born in Hancock County, Indiana and came to Jasper County, Illinois as a child. Their children were John E. (who died in infancy), Clarence L. (died at nine years), Harry E. (died at eight years), Gertrude L., May, and Carl B.

Isaac Shup was a Democrat. In July 1867 he became post master of Newton, Illinois until 1870. He was Justice of the Peace from 1870 to Dec. 1884. He was a member of the 34th General Assembly of Illinois and served one term. He was alderman of Council of Newton, Illinois for five years, and again became Justice of the Peace in 1893. He was the Methodist Episcopal, and a Mason.

Isaac Shup's nephew was Frank L. Shup; these two together bought the Newton Press.
