John, or Walter as I believe he was called from the name on his daughter death certificate, was born in 1864 in Fayette Co., IL., the son of Silas Cates and Emma Oglesby. He married Lavina Akeman on Fayette Co., IL. on Feb. 7, 1889.The date and place of death for John is unknown.
