John William Ricketts, the fifth child of John Roberts and Jane Anderson Ricketts, was born in West Township, Effingham County, Illinois Nov. 26, 1869, and departed this life Jul. 31, 1948, at the age of 83 years, 7 months, and 5 days.


On June 27, 1895 he was united in marriage to Sarah C. Simmons at the home of her parents by Rev. Reed, President of the Methodist Protestant Church. To this union were born three daughters and one son. After more than 51 years of wedded life together, his companion preceded him in death Jan. 13, 1947.

On the 2nd day of Feb., 1880, in a revival meeting held by his father and Rev. J. C. Luce, he was converted at Old Calvary church in Green County, Indiana. He was baptized and united with the Methodist Protestant church of which his father was the minister. Many times he went with his father to old revivals in the churches of the different circuits. In later years he united with the Methodist Episcopal Church of LaClede and was true and faithful to his Master and the Church until he was called away by death to enter into the church triumphant.

He was a kind and loving father, teaching his children the ways of his Heavenly Master, and leading them in the path of truth and righteousness. He was a faithful and compassionate companion, never tiring in trying to bring happiness and comfort to his companion.

Mr. Ricketts will be greatly missed in the community for he had many friends and those who knew and loved him. A he will be missed in church for he was always present as long as his health permitted.

Surviving him are three daughters, Mrs. Pearl Jenkins of Iola; Mrs. Hazel Fallon of Petersburg; and Mrs. Dorothy Cox of Edgewood; and one son, Arlu Ricketts of LaClede; one sister Mrs. Molly Smith of Urbana and one brother George Ricketts of Knox, Indiana.

He also leaves 17 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held in the LaClede Methodist Church Aug. 2, at 2 p.m., conducted by Rev. Elmer Smith, pastor. Burial was made in the Keens Chapel Cemetery, Lash Funeral Service of Farina in charge.
