Interview with John Wilson:

I did a lot of work with Sam see he lived on the Griffith place right after my Dad bought that and I helped him out a lot in fact I helped him build his barn. It's between the two highways now - Interstate 57. Sam and Mamie had a small house there in the bottom, second bottom branch, above high water. He raised a lot of strawberries, he was good on strawberries. Sam was in the Army in 1915 and 16 he was under John J. Pershing and they was trying to run down Pancho Villa down there in Mexico. He said he got so sick and tired of them greasy (these are the exact words spoken, not my opinion) Mexicans that he came back home and re-enlisted for two years up in Alaska. They sent him up to Nome - 40 to 60 degrees below zero, he liked that. And on the way back, he told me, they put him on board ship, brought him back to Seattle, they got in an awful storm, ship got to rocking pretty bad and Sam got sick. The mate came down and said,"Boys, I think we are going to sink!" Sam said, "Let 'er sink!" He was so sick.
