Zeb Dickey Alford, USN (ret) accepted his orders for Eternal Patrol on August 5th, following a heart attack Sunday afternoon. He was a veteran of service on the Cutlass. Comments: My father, Ronald St.Martin (aka 'Hoppy') was a torpedo man on the USS Cutlass SS-478 during the Korean War. He passed away from a stroke in July of 2000. He was below decks at the time. He hed died

Really enjoyed duty on Cutlass, great crew, lots of good memories, and lots of med.cruises,carribeanna trips. Got orders to Scorpion in oct 67(not happy about that).I was on Scorpion till she departed on her final patrol. I had car trouble and came running down Pier 22 just as she was backing into the channel,yup,missed movement. Got assinged to SubRon 6,then Camp Allen Brig for 30 days then Orion AS-18 R-4Div electronic shop. Of my 10 years in the navy, my time on Cutlass is the most memorable.

Comments: I'm researching a biography of a scientist named Townsend Brown. Brown did some work with "plasmoids" and that brought me to this website, re: the reported "ball lightning" indicent aboard the Cutlass. Is there anybody tuned into this channel who was there during that event who can tell me more about it?

I'm also curious about some of the movements of the Cutlass, particularly it's reputed ability to "suddenly... show up where she had not been detected." Anybody know anything about that?

Comments: WOW!!! A really "nostalgic" evening looking for my old shipmates. I found a few: Michael L. Wiegman, Paul T. Payne, Bob Schaeffer, Bill Crispe, Rutledge (Rut) Etheridge Jr., Gerald (Jerry) Gray, CJ Craven, Chester Tallant. BUT I did make a serious mistake the Commanding Officer while I was onboard was CDR Dan McGlasson NOT CDR D.R. Lundquist who was the Captain on my previous "big-boat - not pig-boat" the USS ENTERPRISE CVAN-65 (After we blew ourselves up off Hawaii on the way to the Tonkin Gulf I don't believe D.R. ever made Admiral). Now Dan McGlasson he was "cool" Anybody remember him sitting on the bow of CUTLASS on the way to the MED shooting skeet "flying fish" or giving me permission to put Vodka in the Bug Juice Machine? Boy I remember a few great stories ...The COB Dan Gotta, Jerry and I took Key West's Fattest GoGo Dancer water skiing but when she jumped overboard to "pee" we couldn't pull her back on board ...had to tow her to shore. Cigarettes for 60 cents a carton (made some money with those until the Cosa Nostra caught on - right Jerry?) Michael what was in that knapsack of yours after you returned from Turkey (corned beef hash ...huh?) Diver Dan did you ever throw up in your SCUBA regulator from drinking to much the night before our morning dives? Of course not you and Bob were pretty much the innocent types. Michael Herbert had the below decks watch when Princes Grace came aboard for Christmas in Monte Carlo . . Anyway Michael forgets to shut a valve in the Officers Galley and when he blew the sanitary tanks - guess what. The Princes left in a hurry that day. All of you guys should really like me . . . I never turned in your "Leave Papers" so you should have had lots of Leave Time thanks to the "4.0 YO" Yep straight 4.0 evaluation marks for 2 years (I got to type my own Enlisted Evaluation).
2 Years on Cutlass . . . probably the most memorable years of my life. What a Great Bunch of Guys to serve with!!!

Infact for 6 months we trained these taiwanese sailors, and boy was that a story. I made two cruises to the med and upon decommissioning i was the most senior man on board. My mom still lives in Coldwater Michigan where they both grew up. I had the opportunity to ride the boat on a dependent's cruise and still have fond memories of that event in my young life. I also had the opportunity while I was in the Navy of taking a tour of the Cutlass after it was transferred to Taiwan. Thanks again for maintaining such a great site

Comments: I read the "Taipei Times" newspaper over the internet to keep up on the news there because my wife is originally from Taiwan. I happened to read an article about a 60 year old boat that is still on active service with the navy of Taiwan. It's named the Hai-Shih (Sea Lion) and it is the former USS Cutlass (ss-478). It's due to be retired from their naval service soon. You may be interested in reading two Taipei Times articles at:

Comments: I was on the Cutlass in 60 and 61 until I went to the Portsmouth Naval Hospital. Then transferred to the Runner and went to the Orion instead of extending to make a Red Sea cruise. Anyone out there on the Cutlass during the Operation Springboard trip to St. Thomas and St. Croix, in 61, where we wrecked the bar in St. Croix ? Also I noticed Bob Rosen had posted to this site. Anyone out there remember when some officer (no name mentioned) cleared the snorkel with the head valve shut and put a BUNCH of water into the running engine room instead of clearing the snorkel. Finally I am looking for a former shipmate who served on the Cutlass in 61 by the name of Phil Puglis. Anyone out there hear of him please let me know. Real good site. I will check it out from now on.

Attended diving school in Key West while attached. Made fourteen dives overseas. Called 'Diver Dan' by crew. Leading seaman under Chief Dan Gotta.
Yeowman was guy named Durfee.
Made two Med patrols, one Gitmo run.
Captain Dan McGlasson was best skipper I ever had. Great Guy!
Never did qualify, but will never forget the Cutlass. Diesels sure beat Nukes!!

served till decommissioning in april 1973 QM2/SS DRANK my dolphins in naples italy. Any one remember John "Wayne" hall when he tried an old movie trick and tried to dive the boat from the bridge?? I barely closed the hatch as he slipped into the con, we took on some water and we had to close the hatch to the control room, filling the conning tower. Some officers were real winners!! Would like to hear from all who served and some of your stories.

I yelled at him and asked if someone gave him the hat or if he served onboard. 65 - 66 he said. so did I! so why couldn't we remember each other. Could be we dont look the same, just about 34 yrs older. We talked by phone a few days later and discovered we did the same thing. On the drive home we remembered. Had a great time talking about the last med. cruise and the trip to Bermuda. Enough said about that. Before Cutlass, I served on the Toro, 422 from 57 to 61. Went to IC B school and then went on the Carp338 Sqd Six. From there onto the Shark SSN 591 for 3 yrs and then Cutlass from 65 -66. Got off Cutlass in the shipyard in Philly in 66. Comments: I served on the Cutlass from early 1970 while in the shipyard, on a Med cruise, met princess Grace and her kids,
while we lost that 2 man sub and suffered sail damage. As
the lowest rated radioman, I had to go out in the storm and
lash the radio masts as best I could during the storm. I
remember later sitting in a bar and overhearing two other
sailers comment on the pig boat that was attacked by a
Russian ship and had it's sail damaged. I didn' say a word.
I enjoyed my time on the Cutlass. It was a great experience
I was then transfered to the Hammerhead SSN663.

I am writing back to thank you for sending me your letter about my father David Frank Tokar. I really thought that I would never hear anything. I am very interested in learning more of what my father did while serving on the USS Cutlass. However, the only way we can correspond is by mail or over the telephone. I do not have a computer at home or at my office. What I do is walk up to the local library and use their computer. I hope to purchase my own computer soon.
I would appreciate if you could send me the three photographs of my father. I never knew him very well because I was so young when he died, only 4 years old. My sister Christine was just 2 years old. He died on January 4, 1974 in an explosion at J&L Steel where he was a welder. He was only 27 years old. My mom says he had fond memories of his days on the USS Cutlass.
You may send me a copy of your Cutlass Roster and highlight the names of all the men who were aboard with my father. That would be great. I was delighted to be able to find this kind of information on the Internet. I appreciate your efforts in keeping the USS Cutlass alive 30 years later.

qualified on the Corporal in '64. THEN, I went to Dam Neck and the FBM thing began!! I was
the first FTM replacement on the T-Cup Blue crew for Charlie Green!! I spent the next 6 1/2
years learning my trade and eventually made chief and spent another 12 years on Holland,
Canopus and Holland, again. I still like to drive behind a bus with the windows open, just for
nostalgia of the 80/90 experience. Nice site and great music. I had a Cutlass friend from boot
camp --- TM3(SS) Watson!! Ain't the mind a nifty thang? I haven't thought of his name for 20+
years!!! Don't remember where he was from, but somewhere in the south, 'cause he had a accint.

like the sound enhancement. I served on the Cutlass from February 1960 through August, 1962. This
included the time periods when the ham radio station was established, the Melville Fuller was sunk,
the after engine room was flooded due to the main induction being manually locked open , we surfaced
in the eye of hurricane Ester and on shake downs after the 1960 overhall, had a practice torpedo
circle and strike us in the side.

Comments: Cutlass Sailors,It is a good time of the year to remember shipmates and when I think Cutlass I remember Garth Linholm. He was in the commissioning crew. I ran into him when we sreved together at POMFPAC in Bremerton, WA. He was a W4 Gunner then and retired as that. I have real fond memories of this man. He was an outdoorsman that could be counted with the best. He was a licensed guide in Montana for both hunting and fishing and did that after he retired. Maybe some of you knew him also. I had many similar experiences serving on the Sea Robin during the 60's. It looks like maybe Cutlass and Sea Robin might have been in the same squadron in Panama in the 40's. Thanks for clarifying what the Joint Civilian Conference was. I have pictures of Sennet and Sea Robin in Pensacola participating in the 1949 conference and had no idea what that was for.
