The Novick Piano Studio has been a member of the Helen Thompson Piano Teachers Association for many years. This program uses a well-established curriculum to teach reading, ear training, theory and concepts in an integrated, carefully planned order. Students are taught to use both hands from the very beginning. Opportunities to perform for school, church and community activities are encouraged. Students may purchase or borrow additional music from the Studio's Library. Most lessons are taught in the student's home. Advanced students are encouraged to become student teachers and are trained and supervised in the use of the curriculum. Progress reports are done at regular intervals. A schedule of rehearsals accompanies the opportunity to perform in recitals and auditions. Several family members playing together in a recital can be a very special occasion. Students also have the recital option of playing in a duet or a group with their friend or their teacher. This interaction reinforces what has been learned and contributes greatly to motivation and enjoyment of the learning process. The studio offers a variety of student and adult teachers with tuition charges based on the teacher's experience.
Many parents ask about the optimum age for a child to begin piano lessons. One way to assess the child's readiness for lessons is to have a parent-child-teacher conference in the child's home. Many factors are involved. Younger children may learn quickly if they can sit still and focus their attention for more than a few minutes. One limiting factor is the size of the child. Tiny fingers have difficulty in reaching the keys. Small children may lack the hand-eye coordination or the motivation to learn to play. Children of school age will often experience greater rewards for their efforts than will pre-school children. Family members can greatly enhance the learning experience through their positive interaction with the student. Parents and teachers should meet on a regular basis to discuss the progress of the lessons.
