New Curriculum for Grades 9 & 10

The curriculum for grades 9 & 10 will consist of six modules of learning. Each module will be a six week course in the topics necessary for Confirmation preparation. Each module is taught by a different catechist and will be taught 3 times throughout the year. This will give each catechist the chance to become knowledgeable in the content of one subject. Class size will depend on the number of students enrolled. The total number of students enrolled per grade will be divided into three and those students assigned to a module. At the end of six weeks, each group will rotate into a different module. This will keep the class size down and proved the opportunity for the relational ministry that is so important in faith formation.

The topics for the modules will follow the Catechism of the Catholic Church and are as follows:

Grade 9

Ashlan
Carnel
Module I
"What does your heart desire? The inborn hunger for God"
Elizabeth
Peine
Module II
"Why do we need the Church?
The Church passes on divine revelation"
Rick Rottman
Module III
"Who do people say that I am?
You are the Messiah!"

Grade 10

Dan Breuer
Module IV
"What is right and wrong and how do we know? Morality and conscience"
Bill Sullivan
Module V
"What is prayer?
Called to an encounter with God"
Bob Wernimont
Module VI
"Who guides and inspires you?
The Holy Spirit"

These topics will be used for our students to dig deeper into their faith. What does it mean to be a Catholic? What is a faith response? This program will raise the bar on what we expect of our youth. As God blesses us there is to be a response back to him. This faith response is what He wants from us. This is when God bends close to us and listens.

NET Retreats-Required for grades 9 and 10

9th and 10 graders are required to attend one NET Retreat weekend at the NET Center in S. St. Paul sometime during their 9th or 10th grade year. Please click here to register on-line, obtain and event waiver form and to pay the full fee of $145. Youth Group (CYF)

On Saturday, December 5th, CYF is planning to help out at Bridging Inc. in Bloomington from noon to 2:30 PM. We will depart from St. Mathias at 11:15 AM. Bridging is a non-profit agency that helps folks in need with household goods & furniture. From Bridging we will go to Grandslam in Burnsville. The cost for 3 hours of unlimited activities (such as lazer tag, bumper cars, mini-golf) is $15. We will then attend the Lifeline Mass in West St. Paul at 6:15 PM. A parental permission slip is required. Contact Tim to obtain one or for more information.

CYF is for all students (and friends) in grades 9-12 from St. Pius V, St. Joseph's, St. Mathias and St. Mary's. The Youth Director is Tim Kiminski and can be reached at 651-214-3928 or e-mail to timk@stmathias.com. Discipline Policy for Faith Formation Grades 7-10

The discipline policy for our St. Pius V Faith Formation program is simple: All students have a right to expect an atmosphere conducive to their learning and spiritual development. We will foster this environment with the generous work of volunteer catechists and supportive parents. Hence, students are expected to be respectful, modest, prompt, orderly and attentive to their classroom studies and extra-curricular activities.

If a student is not able to abide by the above stated common courtesies, they will be given a warning.

The next incident and the student will be sent to the Coordinator’s Office. There the student will discuss the problem with the Coordinator with the expectation that the problem will be corrected and they will be sent back to class.

Third time and the student will be sent to the Coordinator’s office and student will call parents for them to pick them up from class.

Parents are welcome to be present in their child’s classroom and to talk to the catechists and the Coordinator outside of class about concerns and questions they may have about their children.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Debbie Bauer
