When the Civil War began, 21-year-old David enlisted at LaSalle, Illinois. He joined Co. "F", 104th Regt. Illinois Infantry. He was captured and made prisoner by the Confederates at Hartsville, Tennessee. David was released in December, 1862. David suffered several serious woulnds at Atlanta, was badly injured on his right cheek and lost the use of his right hand. From then on, David always wore a beard to cover his facial scars.
Seven years passed, and David fell in love with Adaline Brady. They were married in 1871 at Ottawa, Illinois. In 1878, David, sister Sarah and Reuben Reynolds, migrated by rail to Hutchinson, Kansas. From there, they went by wagon to Smoots Creek Valley, where David purchased the site in 1880, later named Varner, Kansas.(Kingman Co. land book, U.S. Government granted land to David Varner in 1880. Research of Marguriete Varner Fowler, Jay, OK.Other early settlers were Eugene Wingate, Frank Frakes, John Gorman, B. Brown, Palmer Brown and Levi Schooley. Most were farmers, raising wheat and cattle. David's wife, Adaline, did not survive the hardships of the Kansas prairie. She died in 1885, and is buried in the cemetery at Varner.(Reno Co. Library Records) Together, David and Adaline had five children.
