When the Civil War began, 21-year-old David enlisted at LaSalle, Illinois. He joined Co. "F", 104th Regt. Illinois Infantry. He was captured and made prisoner by the Confederates at Hartsville, Tennessee. David was released in December, 1862. David suffered several serious woulnds at Atlanta, was badly injured on his right cheek and lost the use of his right hand. From then on, David always wore a beard to cover his facial scars. ![]()
