"One of the better known early residents of this community was Ervin H. Whitehead. "Ervie", as he was called, was born to Ervin and Susan Bellamy Whitehead in the Cameron Community on July 26, 1887. His parents had homesteaded in the Cameron Township.
Ervie graduated from the St. Paul Business College in 1908. He worked in the Navy shipyards as a bookkeeper at Seattle, Washington for several years. In 1911, he was married to his boyhood sweetheart, Vesta Deffenbaugh,in Bremmerton, Washington. ERvie and Vesta lived in Bremmerton, Washington, then moved to Great Falls, Montana, Orfino, Idaho, and on to Moscow, Idaho. They returned to Cairo in 1917 and was in the automotive business and well-drilling. During the depression and years of drought, Ervie sought other means of employment and worked for the Dempster Well Company as salesman for a wide area. At this time, they moved to Washington, Idaho, where they resided until 1956 when Ervie retired and moved back to Cairo.
Both Ervie and Vesta were active in community affairs. Ervie was a member of several area bands and held public offices in the communities where he lived. Vesta was a Spiritual and a member of the Royal Neighbors.
After Vesta's death, Ervie made his home with his sister, Ella Rounds. At Ella's death, he entered a rest home in Ravenna, Nebraska, and remained there until he died.

1900 Census of Cameron Twp., Hall co., Nebraska shows Ervin, age 12, living at home working on the farm. He can read, write and speak English.

Ervin married Vesta Deffenbaugh, daughter of Sylvester Deffenbaugh and Virginia Young, in 1911 in Bremmerton, Washington. (Vesta Deffenbaugh was born on 1 Sep 1887 in Hastings, Adams Co., Nebraska, died on 6 Sep 1959 in Cairo, Hall Co., Nebraska and was buried in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Cairo, Nebraska.)
