The Toy Resource Center started as the Rochester Toy Library (RTL) in 1985, as a project of the Junior League of Rochester with start up funding from Rochester Area Community Foundation and Daisy Marquis Jones Foundation. The RTL became successful very quickly as a membership-based model with more than 400 members within the first six months of operation in its first location on South Clinton venue. A few years later, RTL moved to the corner of North Street & Lynhurst and expanded to include two generous playrooms with wonderful murals painted on the walls by Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) students. The toy collection grew to over 5000 toys, and became a model for other toy libraries nationally and internationally. Community outreach included scholarship memberships for families and childcare centers as well as volunteer mentor visits to urban childcare centers and neighborhood schools with themed play programs and toys. In 1994, the Junior League of Rochester gifted RTL to the Society for Protection and Care of Children (SPCC) of Rochester. SPCC gifted the Rochester Toy Library to the Rochester Public Library, and reopened at the Lincoln Branch Library in April 2000. The toy library was renamed "Toy Resource Center at the Lincoln Branch" (TRC). Generous community grants and volunteer support have continued to support the Toy Resource Center throughout its history. TRC remains one of the largest toy library collections and play space in the world serving a diverse city and county population.
