  Letter from the Editor...

Dear Folks,

Our Thanksgiving Issue is dedicated to praising our Lord Jesus Christ!  Despite trying times, we have much to be thankful for.  Let us give honor and glory to Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who alone is worthy.  Let's put aside our worries and fears, they are a sure sign of a lack of faith anyway, and remember that we have a Messiah who is coming again.  We rejoice in the many blessings He has bestowed upon us, even when we don't deserve them.  He is always faithful and true and keeps His promises.  Let's rejoice and give thanks, for we have a Savior that cares for us and loves us.

The Believer's Mission...

"Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings,

As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:

If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.

To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious,

Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.

Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.

Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,

And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient; whereunto also they were appointed.

But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light: which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy."

1 Peter 2:1-10

Jesus, The Real Messiah

When times are troubled and uncertain, we all look for a "messiah"; someone who can make things better.  We look for someone who can deliver us out of our circumstances and bring us to a better place in life.

Little girls look to their fathers, young women look for their knight in shining armor, and all of us look for someone we can look up to, a hero.  Unfortunately, human heroes are flawed.  They don't measure up to our expectations.  How disappointed we are when eventually we come to know them for who they really are, flaws and all.

There are many who would like to claim the role of hero in our lives.  There are those who are heralded as the "messiah", but they are not.  They are merely man's invention.  They do not have the power to save us from the consequences of sinful practices and bad choices.  Their love is not real, but perverted, useful to gain influence in order to elevate themselves to a position of power.

There is one who has come who is a real hero.  He is our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, God's only begotten Son.  Jesus came as a baby and humbled Himself as a servant to others.  He demonstrated the Father's love and grace and mercy in deeds of healing and provision.  He raised the dead to live again.  He is alive.  He forgives sins and restores relationships.  He removes guilt and shame, and provides a second chance, and a third, and a fourth, and as many as we need.  He doesn't hold a grudge, but is ever ready to extend mercy and grace to the repentant one.  Jesus values life, teaching us that each person has value and significance.  He loves the unlovely, the difficult one, the damaged one, and any who are pushed aside and forgotten.  Jesus meets needs and makes provision to fill those needs.  Character-wise, Jesus is without sin.

Jesus is the real hero.

We can depend on is Jesus.  He promises to never leave us or forsake us.

"...for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee."  Hebrews 13:5b

Jesus loves us; all of us.

'The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance."  2 Peter 3:9

Jesus loves the outcast.

Jesus loves the little children.

Jesus loves the sinner.

Jesus is a man of action and words.

"Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many."  Matthew 20:28

Jesus heals all our sicknesses and diseases.

Jesus feeds the hungry.

Jesus cares for the widow and the orphan.

Jesus is the Savior, the only Savior.  There is no other by any other name.

"Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life:  no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." John 14:6

Jesus takes away our reproach before our heavenly Father, and restores us to a right relationship, for He has covered our sin with His blood.  By Him we are made acceptable unto the Father.

Jesus forgives all our sins.

Jesus promises believers a place in Heaven with Him.

Jesus is a righteous judge.

"I can of mine own self do nothing:  as I hear, I judge:  and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me."  John 5:30

"As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten:  be zealous therefore and repent."  Revelations 3:19

Jesus' decisions are fair and righteous.

Jesus' corrections are deserved and administered properly.

Jesus' punishments are swift and sure when He chooses to act after much longsuffering.

Jesus is the real hero.

If you're looking for a hero, then call upon Jesus.  He is faithful and true.  He builds up, not tears down.  He restores, not casts out.  With Him there is no favoritism.  All can come to Him and receive forgiveness of sin, salvation from the punishment of sin, and eternal life with Him.

"Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons:  but in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him."  Acts 10:34-35

If you are struggling to believe the truth and do not know Jesus as your Savior, then please go to Do you know for sure?

   MUSINGS...

"Pray for the peace of Jerusalem:  they shall prosper that love thee."  Psalm 120:6

"Keep not thou silence, O God:  hold not thy peace, and be not still, O God.  For, lo, thine enemies make a tumult:  and they that hate thee have lifted up the head.  They have taken crafty counsel against thy people, and consulted against thy hidden ones.  They have said, Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation; that the name of Israel may be no more in remembrance.  For they have consulted together with one consent:  they are confederate against thee..."  Psalm 83:1-5

"Draw me not away with the wicked, and with the workers of iniquity, which speak peace to their neighbours, but mischief is in their hearts. Give them according to their deeds, and according to the wickedness of their endeavours:  give them after the work of their hands; render to them their desert.  Because they regard not the works of the Lord, nor the operation of his hands, He shall destroy them, and not build them up." Psalm 28:3-5

"Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.  Abstain from all appearance of evil.  And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ." 1 Thessalonians 5:21-23

"Great peace have they which love thy law:  and nothing shall offend them." Psalm 119:165

"Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it." 1 Thessalonians 5:24

"Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them.  For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple.  For your obedience is come abroad unto all men.  I am glad therefore on your behalf:  but yet I would have you wise unto that which is good, and simple concerning evil.  And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly.  The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen."  Romans 16:17-20

Putting First Things First

by Nancy Twigg

If ever there was a woman who lost control of her priorities, it was Martha, whose story is recorded in Luke 10. Poor Martha. Too bad she will forever be remembered as the one who was more concerned about making dinner than making Jesus feel welcome in her home!

What separates Martha from her sister Mary is that Martha did not order her time by her priorities. She may have sincerely thought that welcoming Jesus was most important, but her behavior did not reflect that. It’s as if she had a choice of visiting with Jesus or vacuuming, and she chose the vacuum. It’s not that Mary didn’t help out with the chores. I believe she did—perhaps she did the dishes before Jesus arrived. But once Jesus set foot in their home, Mary dropped the busy work in favor of what really mattered—spending quality time with her Lord.

Jesus’ response to Martha is just as applicable to us as it was to her: “Martha, Martha! You are worried and upset about so many things, but only one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen what is best, and it will not be taken away from her” (Luke 10:41, 42, CEV).

Let’s be honest. Don’t we all make Martha’s mistake? We mean well. We want to help out in our children’s school and be active in our communities and do our part at church. As with Martha’s cooking and cleaning, there’s nothing inherently wrong with any of these activities. The problem is when they become a hindrance and keep us from doing what really matters—spending quality time with our Lord and the people He puts in our path.

Learning to live our priorities actually encompasses all three parts of the Clarity Principle found in Hebrews 12:1-2. Getting rid of extraneous obligations and expectations is one of the ways we “throw off everything that hinders.” Not letting the trivial supersede the vital is an example of how we “run with perseverance the race marked out for us.” And ordering our lives around what God wants is part of how we “fix our eyes on Jesus.”

When you truly put first things first, all other things fall in line. Confusion dissipates. Decisions are much less difficult. If an activity or commitment fits with what you value most and what you believe God is calling you to do, the answer is yes. If an activity or commitment doesn’t fit with your priorities, the answer is an unapologetic no. Instead of feeling torn, you can rest in the knowledge that you are right on target—putting your energy where it needs to be.

Life is much simpler when your values and decisions are clear and your decisions clearly support your values.

"Every man's work shall be made manifest:  for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is.  If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward.  If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss:  but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire."  1 Corinthians 3:13-15

Rejoicing in His Goodness

"And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me."  Matthew 11:6

This year we have much to be thankful for, despite troubled times. We rejoice in the faithfulness of our Savior, Jesus Christ, who has prepared a place for us in His heavenly kingdom.  We have hope for a future in eternity.

"And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand."  John 10:28

We welcome those circumstances that force us to trust Him for our very sustenance, for we are reminded that in ourselves we can do nothing.  He is our help in time of need, and in Him must we trust.

"The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in Him, and I am helped:  therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth; and with my song will I praise Him. The Lord is their strength, and He is the saving strength of His anointed."  Psalm 28: 7-8

Our Lord puts families together. Our brothers and sisters and parents are God ordained, not randomly selected on a whim. We rejoice that the solitary are given families who love them and care for them.  For He promised…

"For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God"  Romans 8:14-16

"God setteth the solitary in families..."  Psalm 68:6

Let us rejoice that we have work to do that occupies our hands and minds.  He has given us purpose in living that we might benefit others with the fruit of our labors.  His provision is sufficient when used wisely and well.  He is sufficient for all our needs.  He is our helper.

"Blessed be the Lord, who daily loadeth us with benefits, even the God of our salvation. Selah."  Psalm 68:19

We humble ourselves before Him, because He knows us from the womb, even to the number of hairs on our head.  He knows the secrets of our heart and still loves us.  He watches our deeds and like a loving father, corrects and reproves so that we might walk in righteousness and holiness.  He knows our weaknesses, but He welcomes us into relationship with Him with open arms.  We rejoice in the bounty of His love for us.

"O Lord, thou hast searched me, and known me. Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off. Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways.  For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O Lord, thou knowest it altogether."  Psalm 139:1-4

"The Lord hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love:  therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee."  Jeremiah 31:3

He changes hearts and minds, opening our hearts to understanding of His truth.  We are not left to ourselves, but can come under His tutelage to gain knowledge and understanding of His Word.  He helps us live out these truths in our lives, so that others may experience Him through our testimony.

"But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord." 2 Corinthians 3:18

"For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ."  2 Corinthians 4:6

We give thanks for our Father in Heaven, for His Son Jesus, and for the Holy Spirit, our Comforter.

"Now He that hath wrought us for the selfsame thing is God, who also hath given unto us the earnest of the Spirit."  2 Corinthians 5:5

"Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:  by whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.  And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also:  knowing that tribulation worketh patience; and patience, experience; and experience, hope:  and hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us."  Romans 5:1-5

To Render Thanks Unto the Lord

-Anonymous

To render thanks unto the Lord
it is a pleasing thing,
And to thy name, O thou most High,
due praise aloud to sing.
Thy loving-kindness to show forth
when shines the morning light;
And to declare thy faithfulness
with pleasure every night.

On a ten string-ed*** instrument,
upon the psaltery,
And on the harp with solemn sound,
and grave sweet melody.
For thou, Lord, by thy mighty works
have made my heart right glad;
And I will triumph in the works
which by thine hands were made.

How great, Lord, are thy works!
Each thought of thine how deep it is:
A brutish man it know-eth not;
fools understand not this.
It is that they for ever may
destroy-ed*** be and slain;
But thou, O Lord, are the most High,
forever to remain.

Those that within the house of God
are planted by his grace,
They shall grow up, and flourish all
in our God's holy place.
To show that upright is the Lord:
he is a rock to me;
And he from all unrighteousness
is altogether free.

  HOME SCHOOL TIPS

OUR CHRISTIAN HERITAGE

Given the opportunity that we have to homeschool our kids, we need to make sure that we use our opportunity to its full advantage. Our nation was founded on Judeo-Christian principles.  Many of our nation’s early documents support this fact.  Let us teach our kids to rightly understand the contents of the Constitution and the ramifications of re-interpreting it’s message.  Our kids need to become familiarized with the contents of the Declaration of Independence, the Mayflower Compact, and other important documents from our country’s early foundation so that they will know that the original colonists, the Separatists, came with the intent to further the Gospel message of Jesus Christ.

One of our most precious freedoms is the right of freedom to exercise our religious beliefs.  Many countries do not permit such freedoms and go so far as to hinder Christianity.  Many Christians in these countries suffer from intense government scrutiny, persecution, and death.  We are blessed because we can freely gather together and worship the Lord.  We do not fear for our lives.  Yet our freedom is in constant danger from those who would seek to remove God from public life.  Christians are mocked and scorned in our nation today.  Many freely admit they reject God's Laws and standard.  We pray that future generations will enjoy the freedoms we have.  Consequently, we must preserve our religious freedom by teaching our kids to value and to protect it.

Our kids need to understand patriotism and what it means to be patriotic.  By doing so, we can teach them why retaining our national identity is important to maintaining our freedoms.  Let's inspire them to become passionate about this great nation, understanding the responsibilities we have as individuals to foster the cause of freedom.

This Thanksgiving, let’s teach them about their Christian heritage.

"Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that thou mayest be wise in thy latter end."  Proverbs 19:20

THOUGHT PROVOKERS

What is a spirit of devotion?

Excerpts from Prayer and Devotion by E. M. Bounds

"The great lack of modern religion is the spirit of devotion. We hear sermons in the same spirit with which we listen to a lecture or hear a speech.  We visit the house of God just as if it were a common place, on a level with the theater, the lecture-room or the forum. We look upon the minister of God not as the divinely-called man of God, but merely as a sort of public speaker, on a plane with the politician, the lawyer, or the average speech maker, or the lecturer."

What is a spirit of devotion?

"The spirit of devotion puts God in all things. It puts God not merely in our praying and church-going, but in all the concerns of life."

"The spirit of devotion removes religion from being a thin veneer, and puts it into the very life and being of our souls."

"The spirit of devotion is not merely the aroma of religion, but the stalk and stem on which religion grows.  It is the salt which penetrates and makes savory all religious acts.  It is the sugar which sweetens duty, self-denial and sacrifice."

How is a spirit of devotion manifested?

"The ardor of devotion is in prayer."

"The ministry of prayer, if it be anything worthy of the name, is a ministry of ardor, a ministry of unwearied and intense longing after God and after His holiness."
