There is a house in Concord which has quite an interesting legend. The names have been withheld from this internet version.

Many years ago, the legend grew that this house was haunted by a one-legged ghost. That did not stop the current owners, however, and they decided to buy it.

In 1940, the house needed a new water system put into the basement, where the owners found the bones of what seemed to be a one-legged person with a crutch. They never moved the bones because the bones crumbled when touched, but the owners did remove the crutch. (Editor's Note: I've seen the crutch. It's very old and was "home-made." JS)

This leads to a second legend.

According to the owners, they were told that a black soldier who had fought in the Civil War and had lost one of his legs in battle moved to Concord and had lived in the home for many years. He died one winter and, because of the frozen ground, he had to be buried in the basement of the house. They assumed this was the body they uncovered in their basement and he lies there still.

As an added note, however, there is also a story that Colonel George (originally from the Wasioja Seminary) lost a leg during the Civil War. Colonel George returned to the Wasioja area with a black servant. Could this crutch actually have belonged to Col. George?
