The following year, John and Susan Johnston moved to Sault Ste. Marie where Johnston took over the fur trading business from Jean Baptiste Cadotte who had been there for many years and wanted to retire. John and Susan had a happy marriage that lasted until Johnston's death 37 years later (1828). Their large family included a beautiful daughter Jane who was educated in Ireland and married Henry Schoolcraft in 1823. Her brother, George Johnston, became Schoolcraft's interpreter. The Johnston home has been preserved at Sault Ste. Marie.
