Waub-O-Jeeg learned to fast and to endure suffering and fatigue. He acquired skills in hunting and learned caution in the forest, how to be secretive, to listen for the sound of a broken twig or how to lay in ambush for an enemy. He grew to be six feet six inches tall, slim and straight as an arrow. With piercing black eyes and great speaking abilities, he made a commanding presence and showed leadership qualities. By age twenty-two he was already a war leader. His first war parties consisted of volunteers who joined him at war danced or to whom he sent wampum or tobacco. Most of these were short forays to kill a few Sioux or Fox, tear off their scalps and return home to celebrate. Seven times Waub-O-Jeeg led such raids and suffered wounds in the thigh, shoulder, side and breast.
