(2004-2005)
Gary Payton was traded to the Celtics in the summer of 2004 after signing a one year contract extension with the Lakers. Payton started all 77 games that he was available to play for the Celtics. He missed two games due to injury and three games after being traded to the Atlanta Hawks for Antoine Walker. Payton did not play a game for the Hawks, his contract was bought out by the Hawks and he was released on March 1. He then resigned with the Celtics after becoming a free agent. Payton averaged 11.3 points (.468 FG%, .761 FT%), 6.1 assists, 3.1 rebounds, 1.14 steals and 33.1 while playing for the Celtics.
Payton and the Celtics won the Atlantic Division and the 3rd seed in the Eastern Conference and faced the heavily favored Indiana Pacers in the first round of the 2005 NBA Playoffs where the young Celtic team eventually lost in 7 games in a series that went back and fourth with both teams winning blow out games.
