"We all got the measles when I was 12, and both Leola and Bessie, the two oldest, got the measles and it turned into pneumonia and they died just a month apart. Clarice was in California and came home alone."- Nora Welsh Hammer

Newspaper clipping:"Miss Leola Welsh died Wednesday afternoon April 19, 1899 at 4 o'clock at her home in Elba, age 18 years, five months and twelve days. She was sick nearly three weeks with the measles which finally developed into lung fever from which she died. She attended school in St. Paul several months. She was teaching her second term of school at the time of her sickness. She was a member of the United Brethern Church and the Christian Endeavor at Elba, of which she was an active member and a good worker.
The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Epley at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon. The remains were interred in the Cotesfield Cemetery.
Miss Leola will be greatly missed by her large circl of friends, who sympathize with the bereaved family."

"Memorial: Leola Ray Welsh was born in Cotesfield, Nebraska, Dec. 7, 1879, and died in Elba, Nebr., April 19, 1899. She was a member of the Elba church and Endeavor. Her ambition was to good to others. She was a successful teacher and her death is a great loss to her home and the community. In conversation with her pastor she had often expressed her aim in life to be to help others to be better. The funeral was largely attended, the church being crowded. The funeral was conducted by the writer. The family have the sympathy of the entire community. L.L. Epley

Obituary in scrapbook of her sister, Nora Hammer. "Miss Welsh was one of Howard county's bright, energetic teachers and a young lady who was beloved by everyone that knew her. She was a conscientious Christian. The bereaved family has the sympathy of the entire community."
