Nora Welsh Hammer wrote the following about her mother: "Mother's parents were Johann and Mary Svoboda. Neither had any brothers, sisters, or cousins. They lived at Brunn, Moravia, now part of Czechoslovakia. They went to private schools (their children). They had Clementine, Mary, Mary Magdalene (Maggie, my mother) and Vince. (4) They came to the United States when Mother was fifteen. They first settled in Schuyler, Nebraska, where Grandpa ran a butcher shop; then moved to a farm between St. Paul and Farwell, Nebraska. People said Mother was the prettiest girl in the valley." ![]()

The cause of his death was myocarditis. |
