Nora Welsh Hammer wrote the following about her mother: "Mother's parents were Johann and Mary Svoboda. Neither had any brothers, sisters, or cousins. They lived at Brunn, Moravia, now part of Czechoslovakia. They went to private schools (their children). They had Clementine, Mary, Mary Magdalene (Maggie, my mother) and Vince. (4) They came to the United States when Mother was fifteen. They first settled in Schuyler, Nebraska, where Grandpa ran a butcher shop; then moved to a farm between St. Paul and Farwell, Nebraska. People said Mother was the prettiest girl in the valley."

Mary married Fredrick Welsh, son of James Welsh Jr. and Elizabeth Irvine, on 9 Jul 1877 in St. Paul, Howard County, Nebraska.⁸⁵ (Fredrick Welsh was born on 9 Oct 1855 in Morris Twp., Huron, Ontario, Canada ⁸⁵, christened on 21 Oct 1855 in Kincardine Twp., Huron Co., Ontario, Canada,⁸⁶ died on 25 Feb 1935 in Vassar, Tuscola Co., Michigan ⁸⁷ and was buried on 28 Feb 1935 in Riverside Cem., Vassar, Tuscola Co., Michigan.) The cause of his death was myocarditis.
