The Outpost

HISTORY, GEOGRAPHY, AND CURRENT EVENTS

John Corbott (namesake of largest island in Lake Chetac) and Frank D. Stout (Stout Univ. founder & namesake of island in Red Cedar) are undoubtedly the two men most responsible for bringing the Birchwood area to civilization. As logging barons, these two individuals created what was to become a chain of six lakes known as the Chetac - Red Cedar Chain.

Separated from the rest of the chain by a dam at the town of Birchwood, the Chetac, Big Birch, Little Birch lakes form a chained segment that totals over seven miles long.

Fishing can be outstanding on the lakes, especially on Lake Chetac. Walleye, Northern Pike, Smallmouth and Largemouth Bass, and Panfish abound.

"The Outpost" is located on the East side of Lake Chetac about half-way up the lake. Along with 8 other dwellings, The Outpost once formed the East Shore Resort. Having been the resort owner's residence the home offers a beautiful view of 1,950 acre Lake Chetac.  With 3 bedrooms and a pullout couch, accommodations are present to sleep 10 comfortably.

Geographically, "The Outpost" is across the street from the TP Resort Bar & Grill, 6 miles from Birchwood, and 25 miles from Rice Lake, Spooner, and Hayward. The LCO Casino is approx. 15 miles North. The Chippewa Flowage is also about 15 miles away. No less than 25 golf courses are in a 25 miles radius. The original "Famous Dave's" is located about 6 miles East of Hayward. Stout Island Inn is only 8 miles away. Doolittle Park with its sand beach and picnic facilities is located on Birch Lake - a 10' drive by boat or car.

Some of the summer's hi-lites include Spooner's professional Wild West Rodeo, the World Lumberjack Championships in Hayward, and Rice Lake's Aquatennial. Weekend  fishing and golfing tournaments abound.  Day-trips, whether to Bayfield with its Apostle Islands or to Duluth with its many harbor-side attractions, can be a real hi-lite.

If you're just into a relaxing weekend away from the hustle and bustle, then The Outpost is a nice place to read a book, go for a car-ride, or to build a campfire.

Whether it be fishing, water-skiing, pontooning, golfing, canoeing, antique shopping, or simply visiting the area's numerous tourist attractions, there's something for everyone. Get your reservation in fast - we've never not filled up!!!!!!! (Check out our 2010 calendar)
