Fine Papercutting & Hebrew Calligraphy by Aharon Baruch

THE ARTIST

Aharon Baruch was born in Jerusalem in 1959. He has studied and worked in many art media, from graphics and painting to metallurgy, but most enjoys papercutting and Hebrew calligraphy. He brings to his work years of textual study and a unique personal style.

After completing service in a paratrooper's unit of the Israeli army, Aharon was sent to the French Riviera to work as a "Shaliach" (an Israeli cultural representative and community youth director). Upon his return to Israel in 1983, Aharon began to do cut and paste work for a graphic studio. The artists he met at that time, as well as his work experience, prompted him to try papercutting as an art form.

While working as a veteran's counselor for Israel's Department of Defense, Aharon studied calligraphy, collected various cutting tools, and developed his own cutting style for paper and parchment. Aharon does not fold his paper to ensure symmetry; he cuts the entire piece with surgical knives.

Aharon has produced many traditional works of art, as well as many decorative pieces based on various blessings and Biblical and Talmudic stories. He has displayed his work at several shows in the United States and in Israel.
