Unsual Relation

Husband:   Robert, Jr Sutherland

Born: 1782
Died: 1814
Father: Robert Sutherland
Mother: Elizabeth (unk)

From MacKinnon's book: Robert Sutherland (Jr) first drew a lot along the Nashwaak which, by 1795, he found "insufficient for the support of the numerous and increasing family." (Ref: PANB, RG10 RS108, Robert Sutherland, 1795) Sutherland's was a part of the 42nd Highland Regiment allotment, these lots being noted for small acreage. In 1809, Robert was granted lots 80 & 81 and Island 28 along the south side of the Miramichi River but there is no evidence he occupied the land. Robert and Nancy sold these lots in 1811 to a George Sutherland (PANB Archives). He married Nancy Ann McLeod (b. 1785) and possible children are Anne (1814), Margaret, and unnamed others. He died in 1814-1815, possibly at St. Mary's. nancy Ann then married John Casey and had a daughter, Sarah (1819-1906) who married James Young.

Source Lowell Watson, ggrandson;
James lived in Oromocto and later in Fredericton. He was a tanner and courier of leather. He became a wealthy man at the time. He owned a large establishment in Fredericton, having a shoe shop and a harness makers shop. The he had a general store which dealt with mercantile business. He furnished lumber camps in which he had an interest.
The big crash came in 1843. Lumber was no longer in demand and the lumber camps failed. James suffered heavy losses, too.
