Habitat for Humanity was born in the mid 70's as a Christian ministry under the leadership of Millard Fuller of Americus, Georgia. It is an ecumenical Christian organization whose mission is to eliminate substandard housing throuhgout the world. However, we encourage participation by people of all faiths and creeds. the local affiliate chapter, Habitat for Humanity of Bulloch County, operates under a charter from the Habitat for Humanity International and has completed ten homes in eight years of operation. We build homes for low income working families in need and who commit to 135 hours of "sweat equity" for each adult family member. The homes are sold to qualified families interest free and cost between $40,000 to $50,000 depending on size and construction costs. Typical house payments total about $250.00 per month for 20 years which includes escrow for interest and taxes. Money paid on the mortgages is used to build more homes.
